Therefore, mood stabilizing medications are generally required, alone or in combination with anti-depressants, to protect patients with bipolar disorder from this switch.

L. Iversen of cannabis users and simply to test them after stopping cannabis use. Pope et al. 2001 ; , for example, recruited 63 current heavy users, who had smoked cannabis at least 5000 times in their lives, and 72 control subjects. Subjects underwent a 28-day washout from cannabis use, monitored by urine assays. At days 0, 1 and 7 the heavy users scored signicantly below control subjects on a battery of neuropsychological tests, particularly in recall of word lists. However, by day 28 there were virtually no differences between the groups on any of the test results, and no signicant association between cumulative lifetime cannabis use and test scores. The fact that drug-induced effects on cognitive performance can persist for up to a week after stopping the drug perhaps because of the persistence of THC in the body, or because of a subtle withdrawal syndrome ; means that many earlier studies that did not allow a sufciently long washout period may be invalid. On the other hand, some well designed studies have shown subtle persistent cognitive decits in ex-cannabis users. Solowij 1998 ; recruited a group of people who had used cannabis regularly for at least 5 years but who had stopped on average 2 years before the experiment. The subjects were given a very difcult task. They had to listen to a series of tones, some in the right ear some in the left; the tones were long or short but differing by only 51 ms ; and high or low pitch but differing very little ; . Participants had to press a button as fast as possible in response to longer tones of a specied pitch in the correct ear. Previous research using this paradigm showed that current regular cannabis users had difculty in discriminating between the tones. Measurements of event-related potentials also revealed small but signicant abnormalities in the P300 wave Solowij, 1998 ; . The ex-users continued to make signicant errors in the discrimination task, but they showed normal P300 waves. The conclusion of these and many other studies in ex-users seems to be that regular cannabis use can cause small but signicant impairments in cognitive function that may persist after drug use stops. Such impairments appear to be associated with long-term heavy use of the drug and are unlikely to affect most recreational users.

The patients will be screened for eligibility to etablish that they meet the inclusion criteria and do not have any criterion for exclusion. Both written and verbal information will be given. Each patient must sign and receive a dated copy of such an informed consent form and will be assured of his or her freedom to withdraw from participation in the study at any time. A baseline medical history is obtained, physical examination performed, and blood is drawn for laboratory tests. The patient should have been examined for vascular reconstruction possibility which has to be ruled out. The eyes should have been examined within the last year with visus and fundus photography and eldepryl.

Synopsis From 1 October 2003, it will be illegal to sell or supply aspirin products not bearing the new statutory label warning - "Do not give to children aged under 16 years, unless on the advice of a doctor". Aspirin 75mg products bearing the existing warnings may still be supplied up until 1 April 2004, as may those few products, which contain differing amounts of aspirin and are indicated in adults only for the prevention of heart disease. In April 2002, the CSM advised that aspirin should be avoided in children aged from 12 up to and including 15 years of age if feverish. In October 2002, it issued new advice following concerns that the warning recommended in April 2002 was too complicated in some cases requiring a parent or minor to correctly diagnose whether they have a febrile illness ; and the message had not got across to the public. The new advice was that aspirin should not be given to children under 16 unless on the advice of a doctor. After 1 October 2003, any stock of aspirin 300mg products not bearing the new warning should not be sold or supplied. Microelectrode vokage-clamp. Activation of PKC was induced by phorbol ester PMA 1 ~M ; . Results: an inhibitory effect could be observed in all homomeric channels. In homomeric Kit2.1 channels inhibition was only weak -10% ; . However, in homomeric Kir2.2 channels -81% ; and in homomeric Kit2.3 channels -58% ; the inhibitory effect was very pronounced. Heteromeric channels exhibited differing reactions. In Kir2.1 Kir2.2 heteromers -24% ; and Kir2.1 Kit2.3 heteromers -10% ; the inhibitory effect was markedly reduced. However, in Kir2.2 Kir2.3 heteromers the inhibitory effect was very pronounced -88% ; . With Kit2.2 mutant channels lacking PKC phosphorylation sites we investigated the relevance of the different subunits of the mukimeric channels. We found that coexpression of the mutant channels with wild-type channels resulted in a marked reduction of the inhibitory effect. We propose that phosphorylation of several subunits of one multimer is necessary to accomplish the inhibitory effect. Conclusion: Kir2.x heteromeric channels are inhibited by a proteinkinase c dependent phosphorylation. Kir2.2 channel subunits play a major role in this regulation, whereas Kir2.3 channel subunits contribute to a lesser extent. The inhibitory effect probably occurs only after phosphorylation of several subunits. These resuks elucidate further details of the molecular mechanisms of adrenergic regulation of cardiac IK1 current.

| Objective: The neural correlates of normal emotional states have begun to receive investigation by functional imaging, but these investigations have primarily evaluated only neuroanatomical sites of activation. The presence of projections from the neuroanatomical substrates of these emotional states to the HPA axis warrants simultaneous investigation of concurrent hormonal responses. Methods: Six non-psychiatric female subjects received neutral and sadness inductions Velten method ; , on different days, with subsequent evaluation by SPECT scanning. This was coordinated with acquisition of cortisol and ACTH levels, and with mood assessment through the visual analog scale and interview. Results: Paired T Test comparison of the scans acquired during sadness induction demonstrated decreased activity in the left thalamus, left dorsolateral prefrontal, parietal, and medial frontal cortices relative to the neutral inductions. Cortisol levels, but not ACTH levels, demonstrated significant increases during sadness inductions relative to neutral inductions, p 0.05 ; . Conclusions: Normal sadness is associated with concurrent neural and hormonal changes. Recent reports have shown TR1 related proteins in mitochondria, which have not been characterized fully. Objective and methods: With specific monoclonal antibody 4C3 recognizing the C-terminus of TR1 involving the T3 binding site, we performed studies to further identify the 45-, 37- and 35-kD TR1 related proteins. We performed 2 dimensional 2D ; gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis in mitochondrial fraction and in whole cell lysate WCL ; from rat liver and heart. Results: In rat liver 5, 4 and 5 proteins with different pI's were detected at the molecular weight MW ; of 45-, 37- and 35-kD respectively. In rat heart 3, and 1 proteins were identified with different pI's of MW 45-, 37- and 35-kD respectively. TR1 proteins in rat Liver and reminyl.

Anesthesia ; . In 1997 both the WHO and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture called on Turkey to stop the practice of unmodified ECT, describing it as degrading for patients and staff. Nine years later, psychiatrists in Turkish public psychiatric hospitals continue its practice. The unacceptable alternative to its use, as they view it, is to leave certain patients untreated, allegedly because of insufficient funds for additional anesthesiologists. The clinical risks, intimidation, and human misery that are caused by the practice of unmodified ECT make this rationale indefensible. Moreover, if the use of ECT were limited to the much narrower spectrum of disorders accepted by other nations, there might be less, not greater need for anesthesiologists in these hospitals. Psychiatrists in Turkish public psychiatric hospitals cannot be held responsible for most of the human rights abuses that prevail there. But their participation in the use of unmodified ECT is something that they can and must take action on without waiting for the Turkish government to change its policies. Presently, they alone as professionals have the power to administer unmodified ECT. It is therefore completely within their power to refuse to participate in the practice and thereby end it once and for all. If they choose to take this principled position, the Turkish Psychiatric Association, the World Psychiatric Association, psychiatric associations in other countries, and general medical associations throughout the world have an obligation to support them vigorously and unambiguously. ECT Practice and Ethical Considerations in Turkey ar Yazgan Marmara University Medical Faculty, Department of Psychiatry, Geropsychiatry Unit, Istanbul, Turkey ECT has been one of the primary treatment tools in Turkey for many years. Until 1990s ECT was administered without anesthesia and muscle relaxation except a few centers. Anesthesiolgy departments did not provide any staff for ECT and modified ECT was not accepted as the more humanitarian technique by most of the psychiatrists. However, reform on ECT administration has been made recently by the new generation of psychiatrists. Eventually number of centers predominantly university hospitals ; administering modified ECT has exceeded the other centers. We have sent surveys regarding ECT use to all available centers in Turkey. The survey includes questions about the type, indications, frequency and complications of ECT practices in these centers. In this session the results of this survey will be provided. This symposium is organized by WPA Section on Conflict Management & Resolution Section ScS.36 Electroconvulsive Treatment Practices, Human Rights and Ethical Considerations-2 ECT Methods in Romania: Technical, Clinical and Ethical Perspectives Dan Prelipceanu1, E.Hriscu2 , Anca Talasman2, Carol Davila1, Al.Obregia3 1 University of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest, Romania 2 Department of Psychiatry, Romania 3 Acad.Psychiatric Hospital. The authors have found that in the largest psychiatry hospital, the use of ECT has significantly and steadily decreased during the last 3 decades. In 1979, ECT was performed on 4, 75 % of the patients admitted for psychoses 27% of these were ECT with anesthesia n 1993, only 2, 1% received ECT 66% with anesthesia during the first 11 months of the year 2005, 0, 49% 75% with anesthesia, for example, diffedin wrinkle.
The entry of calcium into cells via voltage-dependent channels regulates muscle contraction and neuronal discharge 1, 2 ; . Drugs that block these voltage-dependent calcium channels have considerable therapeutic importance in treating angina, hypertension, and other vasoconstrictive disorders 3-5 ; . Various organic slow-calcium-channel blocking agents seem to act differently, with the pharmacologic actions of the dihydropyridine agents differing somewhat from those of drugs such as verapamil, D-600, and diltiazem 6 ; . Recently, we 7 ; and others 8-10 ; have labeled the calcium channel binding sites for dihydropyridine drugs in brain and heart, using [3Hlnitrendipine. While the affinities of the dihydropyridines for these binding sites correlate well with their pharmacologic properties, verapamil, D-600, and diltiazem have 'low affinities for these sites, indicating that the latter drugs act through different receptors. Some inorganic ions, such as barium and strontium, mimic the ability of calcium to pass through the voltage-dependent calcium channels, while cations such as lanthanum and cobalt are calcium antagonists 11 ; . We now report that [3H]nitrendipine binding to 'brain membranes has an absolute- requirement for physiological concentrations ofcalcium. Moreover, inorganic cations interact with calcium in the regulation of [3H]nitrendipine binding in an agonist-antagonist continuum and selegiline.

Several models exist for both increasing potential victim input and creating greater citizen authority over environmental decisions. These models have not been perfected, nor have they been fully implemented and given legal authority, but they are being tested in the real world. Citizen Juries Citizen juries represent a direct form of citizen participation in decision-making processes, modeled after the criminal jury system. Crosby 1995 ; contends: "A group of randomly selected citizens, when exposed to good information presented by witnesses from differing points of view, is able to make good judgments on public policy matters even though in terms of training and experience there are many people more competent than they." The citizen jury concept was developed by the Jefferson Center in Minnesota, USA ; , a nonprofit, non-partisan facilitation organization. A randomly selected group of 12 jurors, designed to represent the general public, is impaneled to study a specific local or regional public policy issue. Juries have also been conducted on national issues. ; The facilitating organization develops a narrow charge, which is presented to jurors at the beginning of the process. The charge generally contains a clear statement of the problem to be addressed, often asking jurors to chose between three or four preselected options, and subsequent follow-up questions to consider. The jurors, who are paid for their time, participate in hearings over 4-5 days, facilitated by a neutral moderator. They hear from "witnesses" presenting a wide range of views on the issue. Jury members may question witnesses. The jurors then deliberate and issue findings and recommendations to policy makers. The process is designed, like a criminal jury, to examine a narrowly defined charge. Jurors receive limited background information and training, and the process does not promote critical inquiry into issues outside the limited mandate Renn, et al., 1995 ; . As the decisions are made by majority vote, minority positions may not be adequately considered in the jury discourse. And, of course, currently these jury decisions have no legal weight. Consensus conferences planning cells Consensus conferences from Denmark ; and planning cells from Germany ; are two mechanisms that engage citizens in examining broadly defined questions of regional or national importance. The consensus conference has been defined in this way.

Measurement of the radioactive iodine uptake RAIU ; is critical in the evaluation of the clinically thyrotoxic patient Table 4 ; . The normal 24-hour RAIU ranges from 10%-30% with some regional variation owing to differences in iodine intake. An elevated RAIU indicates true hyperthyroidism, that is, the patient's thyroid gland is actively overproducing T4, T3, or both. Further diagnostics in patients with elevated RAIU using a thyroid scan will reveal if hyperthyroidism is due to Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, or a toxic solitary nodule. A low RAIU indicates the excess thyroid hormone is not a consequence of thyroid gland hyperfunction. The importance of differentiating true hyperthyroidism from other causes of thyrotoxicosis lies in the widely different prognosis and treatment of the diseases in these two categories. Therapy of thyrotoxicosis associated with thyroid hyperfunction is mainly directed at decreasing the rate of thyroid hormone synthesis, secretion, or both. Such measures are ineffective in treating thyrotoxicosis that is not the result of true hyperthyroidism, because hormone synthesis and regulated hormone secretion are already at a minimum. In the patient with manifest disease, measurement of the serum T4 concentration, T3 resin uptake or free T4 ; , and the TSH value will confirm the and aripiprazole.
