Advances in understanding HBV replication Finding new targets for chronic hepatitis B drugs will depend on improved understanding of the virus replication processes. Michael Nassal, from the University of Freiburg, Germany, gave an update on developments in this area gained from experiments with his group's cell-free reconstitution model of duck HVB polymerase activity. He explained that the cellular chaperones that have been shown to be necessary for initiation of viral reverse transcriptase P protein ; activity are heat shock protein Hsp ; 40 and Hsp 70. These are ATP-dependent folding catalysts and they produce an activated, RNA binding form, of P protein. In recent experiments the researchers have been looking at how this activation occurs. It appears that the chaperones "open up" the inactive form of P protein. Dr Nassal commented that while many questions remain to be answered, it is clear that the activation process involves the transient exposure of an epsilon RNA binding site involving the terminal protein region.

Because femara affects hormones, it could potentially cause serious side effects to a nursing infant and florinef.

Two major brands Glivec1 and Zometa already are blockbusters and a third, Femara, is also expected to exceed peak annual net sales of a billion dollars. A deep pipeline of compounds in development promises to improve and extend the lives of cancer patients through three therapeutic approaches: highly targeted treatments, advanced or improved cytotoxics, and supportive therapies. In addition, both in-market and development compounds are being tested in an expanding program of combination therapies against major tumor types. "We believe that the competitive focus in the world of oncology is changing from an old-fashioned model where companies built their base on single molecules with single mechanisms of action, to broadly diversified franchises covering multiple technology platforms, " says David Epstein, Head, Business Unit Oncology at the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division. "Putting proprietary combinations into the market will be key to further extending the lives of patients.
Is the leading cause of disability in the US, sidelining more people than back problems, heart disease, or injuries. Although depression is generally considered a mental illness, most depressed men will have both physical and psychological symptoms, including: General aches and pains, such as headache, backache, blurred vision, indigestion. Constant feelings of sadness or frequent crying. A drop in performance on the job or in school. Regularly feeling angry, irritable, tense or on edge. Withdrawing from people. Loss of interest or enjoyment in activities and things you used to like. Feelings of guilt for no apparent reason. Generalizing problems, meaning that having a problem in one area makes you feel like your whole life is coming apart. Change in sleeping patterns--either sleeping more than usual or less. Significant weight loss or gain for no particular reason. Loss of self-confidence. Decreased ability to make decisions or concentrate. Difficulty completing daily tasks such as returning phone calls, paying bills, picking up the kids from school or making dinner ; . Trouble finishing projects or delivering on promises. Trouble motivating yourself to do anything. Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, loneliness, or helplessness. Feeling tired and worn down. Thoughts of death or suicide. As devastating as depression can be, the good news is that in most cases it's treatable. Unfortunately most men who have depression don't seek treatment. Some men don't know or don't want to know ; that they have the disease. Other men are afraid of seeming weak or defective if they admit they suffer from depression. And in too many cases, men try to solve their problems by self-medicating with alcohol or drugs. If you experience any of the above symptoms for more than two weeks, or if you feel that any of these symptoms are interfering with your life, see a doctor right away. Not getting the help you need will only make the problem worse for you and those around you and felodipine.

The first four months of 2004 have proven to be an extremely busy time for all at the VMA with continuous change being a hallmark. The Outer Metropolitan Registrars Program have seen the addition of a further ninety suburbs declared as `areas of consideration' bringing the total of areas that meet the definition of `Outer Metropolitan' to some 523 places! The VMA has sought and just recently received from the Department of Health and Ageing a comprehensive list of all declared areas that meet Registrar obligations in respect to Outer Metropolitan placements. These are now posted on the website. In April the VMA underwent training provider accreditation by GPET and the RACGP. The accreditation was extremely wide ranging and covered all areas of our operation. Whilst the VMA will not receive an outcome report for several weeks, we believe that the VMA has performed well and hence we would be hopeful that accreditation would be conferred for another three years. Given that the VMA is in only its third year of operation and in full control of the program since 2003 ; this is testament to all who have been a part of the VMA. In this respect I would like to thank the many Supervisors, Registrars, VMA Board members, Education and VMA staff who have and continue to contribute to the VMA and in particular a special thanks to those individuals that took part in the accreditation process. In 2004 the VMA became host to some 43 GPEA Registrars who were required to complete their training program by transferring to a Regional Training Provider. Whilst this has been a difficult time we trust that each GPEA Registrar has found the VMA to be co-operative and efficient. Upon transferring the VMA audited all files and noted a number of errors and non-completions which we have provided to those individual Registrar. Whilst the VMA understands the annoyance of Registrars in respect to supplying previously rendered material or having to undertake additional activities, please note that unless all RACGP requirements are met, completion of training will not be conferred by the State Censor. We, like you, don't wish to have any last minute problems. Thank you to all those Registrars that have responded and for those who have not, please give it your immediate attention. Planning for the new 2005 Registrar intake is well advanced with interviews beginning 21 June at the VMA office. With in excess of 100 first round interviews to be conducted for the allocated 78 places, the process will prove quite competitive. If any Supervisor would like to participate as an interviewer, please contact the VMA. The VMA will shortly release the Victorian Metropolitan Alliance Minimum Guidelines for the employment of Subsequent Mandatory Elective Registrars. Whilst this is not a binding document for either Registrars or Practices, it does provide a benchmark of VMA expectations for the employment of Subsequent VMA Registrars. Whilst the document has been the subject of extensive discussion and debate, unequivocal endorsement was received by all parties as for the need for a supportive document in this often complex process. As most Registrars are aware Ed Poliness has been `mentoring' Paul Grinzi, George Manoliadis and Lenore Ellet in the role of being a RLO. I think you would agree that they, along with the SLO, David Ringelblum Parkridge Medical Centre ; do a fantastic job. They are there to support you during your time in the program and to try and ensure that things run smoothly. So if you require support not available through other sources within the VMA organisation or just wish to discuss something with a colleague, please contact them. On a separate note Dr Lexia Bryant, Regional Training Co-ordinator for the North East RTG has taken extended sick leave. We wish Lexia the very best for a speedy recovery. Dr Lindsay Quennell has kindly stepped into the breach and assumed the majority of RTGC duties in the North East. He can be contacted through the VMA.

| Not be explained by differences in comorbidity, income, age, access to care, or use of estrogen therapy. Instead, it was attributed to time constraints during office visits for complex chronic disease care, perceptions of decreased life expectancy by both patients and health care providers, and sociocultural barriers to health education. This should serve as a reminder for clinicians to question patients about their primary health care as routinely as they are screened for diabetes complications. This trend of decreased prevention services is disturbing given the evidence to suggest that insulin resistance and diabetes are linked to higher incidences of some cancers. Researchers hypothesize that exposure to hyperglycemia, elevated insulin concentrations, and the growth-promoting effects of IFG-I may stimulate the development or progression of cancer. People with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for developing breast, pancreatic, liver, kidney, endometrial, and colon cancers. Patients with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop cervical and stomach cancers. Several studies have also demonstrated that patients with diabetes and cancer have a poorer prognosis compared with those without diabetes. Diabetes and hyperglycemia are associated with higher infection rates.
